AP Stylebook Workshop

Join editors from The Associated Press for an engaging four-week online workshop guaranteed to build your AP Stylebook knowledge. Participate in live virtual sessions with the editors who make AP style (or catch the recordings afterward), get your questions answered and immerse yourself in lessons, tutorials and knowledge checks to hone your writing and editing.
In four weeks, the course will help you:

  • Improve your writing and communication skills.
  • Bring consistency to your writing and editing, using AP style guidance, Webster’s New World College Dictionary and your house style.
  • Learn to think through questions where existing style rules might not offer a clear answer or the guidance requires judgment to apply to your needs.
  • Understand the how and the why of AP style.
  • Navigate the Stylebook to find guidance quickly – memorization is not necessary or recommended.

Each course registration includes access to AP Stylebook Online, the searchable and customizable AP style resource, as well as the new AP Stylebook Study Guide, a series of self-scoring quizzes that will reinforce the workshop’s lessons, helping you lock in your understanding of AP style.

AP Stylebook Workshop


— Learn directly from the AP editors who set AP style, in a mix of live webinars and on-demand videos on Tuesdays at 11-11:45 a.m. EDT, April 4, 11, 18 and 25.
— Submit your questions as editors discuss the practical application of AP style guidance.
— You also get access to AP Stylebook Online and AP Stylebook Study Guides to help you develop your knowledge.
— You'll have access to the online course materials until June 30, 2023. Live sessions will be recorded so you can watch at your convenience.
— You will receive a certificate of completion and a LinkedIn badge when you finish the course.


— The AP Stylebook Workshop is offered in partnership with EdMaker, experts in online learning communities.
— EdMaker will host the course on its web-based platform. There’s nothing to download or install, but you will need a current browser and reliable internet connectivity. Live sessions take place over Zoom.
— After you register for the AP Stylebook Workshop on the Stylebook website, you will receive your course welcome information in a few minutes from ap@edmaker.co. Look for the subject line “Welcome to the AP Stylebook Workshop.” You’ll set up a username and password once you get that email.
— If you sign up on behalf of multiple users, you will receive an email with individual activation codes for each person. When you share an activation code, each user will go to the code redemption URL to set up an account. As they create their individual accounts, they will get their activation emails from ap@edmaker.co and will set up their own usernames and passwords.
— EdMaker works best when you have JavaScript and cookies enabled. Flash and other plugins are not required.
— You can participate on your computer or mobile device, but you will have a richer experience on a desktop or laptop computer with a bigger screen so you can see the text on screen and engage in chat.


— Paula Froke is editor of The Associated Press Stylebook and a manager on the AP’s Nerve Center. She started her 35-plus years with the AP as a Dow Jones News Fund intern on the AP's main editing desk in New York. Her AP career has included jobs as news editor in Minnesota and Michigan; deputy national editor at headquarters; assistant managing editor/nights on the Nerve Center; AP embedded editor at MSN News; and executive director of Associated Press Media Editors.
— Paula will be joined by several AP journalists.

The AP Stylebook Workshop includes four weeks of AP style instruction, Tuesdays from 11-11:45 a.m. EDT:

Week 1, April 4: Look inside the Stylebook

Live session: Inside the Stylebook with Stylebook editor Paula Froke

  • What AP style is and the history of it.
  • Why word choice matters.
  • How AP style has evolved over time.
  • How Stylebook editors decide on new guidance.

Mechanics how-to video: 10 Stylebook rules

  • Learn 10 of the top rules that are the backbone of AP style.

Week 2, April 11: Apply AP style in real life

Live office hours: Simple rules and their complexities

  • "Simple" rules that aren't so simple — using the serial comma (or not), hyphenating compound modifiers (or not), using words for numbers under 10 (or not) …

Mechanics how-to video: Judgment considerations

  • Writing style isn't always easy — it takes judgment.
  • Different audiences might require different decisions — a news release might look different than the news story, a trade publication might look different than a general readership story, a tweet might look different than the full story.
  • Each organization may want a house style guide — supplementing or varying from AP style as needed.
  • Breaking rules on purpose — know them to break them.

Week 3, April 18: Join AP editors for a roundtable discussion

Live session: Stylebook editors panel and office hours

  • Look at some examples and talk about how different editors could want to do things differently.
  • Consider how to approach a question when AP style doesn't directly answer your question or when you need to look at a couple of related rules to decide what to do.

Live office hours: Solutions to your style questions

  • Submit real-life language challenges and Stylebook editors advise on their solutions.

Week 4, April 25: Learn inclusive storytelling and style

Live session: Inclusive storytelling

  • Why inclusion matters in writing and editing.
  • Principles of some of the major inclusion chapters and entries, including race, gender, immigration, disabilities.

Live mechanics lesson: Inclusive language

  • Pushing back on lazy language of your sources: racially tinged vs. racist, elderly vs. older adults, etc.
  • Key language points on major topics including immigration; older adults; race-related coverage; gender, sex and sexual orientation; disabilities; survivors/victims.
  • Other race/gender/inclusive/sensitivity writing details in practice.
