AP Stylebook Online

AP Stylebook Online is a searchable, customizable guide for writers and editors that is updated throughout the year.

Your subscription includes the popular Ask the Editor feature, where you can ask your own questions and search thousands of past answers, and Topical Guides, offering guidance to help you write about events in the news.

The AP Stylebook is widely used as a writing and editing reference in newsrooms, classrooms and corporate offices worldwide. Stylebook Online builds on everything that’s in the print Stylebook, and makes it a more comprehensive, convenient resource.

Choose the right AP Stylebook online subscription for your needs:

  • How many users do you have?

  • Would you like your subscription to include Merriam-Webster guidance?
  • Would you like to sign up for automatic renewal and save 20%?
  • Do you prefer a named-user site license or a concurrent-user site license?

Stylebook Online is the AP Stylebook but better. It includes:
  • Updates throughout the year, with email notifications as the Stylebook’s editors add or change entries.
  • Ask the Editor, where you can search thousands of previously answered questions in the archive and submit your own query.
  • The ability to create your own custom listings and add notes on entries.
  • Search functionality that makes it easier to find all listings relevant to your query, using either simple or advanced searches. Your custom notes and entries are all searchable, too.
  • Mobile optimization so you can refer to AP style guidance on the go.
  • Specialized chapters cover sports, business, punctuation, religion, data journalism, inclusive storytelling, health and science, news values, and polls and surveys. New chapters cover artificial intelligence and criminal justice, plus a detailed checklist for self-editing is new to the Stylebook.


AP Stylebook Online is easy to use. It’s a web-based tool so there’s nothing to download or install.

If you have a named-user subscription, which most users do, you just activate your account using the link we email you, then log in with your username and password. You’ll find it’s easiest to use Stylebook Online when you click “remember me” when you sign in.

If you have a concurrent-user license, we will ask you for your IP address and the name you would like in your URL, such as apstylebook.com/yourcompany. We will set it up from there and any of your team members on your IP address will be able to use Stylebook Online simply by going to that URL.

APStylebook.com works best when you have JavaScript and cookies enabled and a current web browser.

Flash and other plugins are not required to access AP Stylebook Online.
