Live session topics

Guest speakers to be announced.

Week 1: Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2-3 p.m. EDT

Learn the essentials of AP style for press releases, marketing and corporate communications

Speak the language of reporters and editors by following the industry standard style rules. Learn to avoid simple style mistakes that undermine your announcements. Help your boss or client understand why you need to follow AP style to get the best results, so you’re not just being difficult when you Don’t Capitalize Everything.

The session will cover:

  • AP style guidance for professional writing
  • Capitalization
  • Addresses, datelines, headlines
  • Times and dates
  • Quotes and attribution
  • Numbers

The guidance the AP Stylebook gives about what makes for a good story, and how you can use those requirements to deliver a more fully formed pitch.

Week 2: Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2-3 p.m. EDT

Understand your audience and the news cycle

Your company or client wants that prized media placement, but journalists have their own wants and needs. Learn to tailor your pitch to find the win-win, where you demonstrate results and the reporter tells a story that works for their audience and outlet.

You’ll get multiple perspectives about:

  • How pitching today is different – shrinking newsrooms, shorter attention spans and the demand for content that works visually and on social media all make the landscape so much different from even a few years ago.
  • How to present a dull or tired corporate topic in a way that actually delivers something reporters need.
  • Why using AI as a thought partner can be useful – but it’s not a replacement for strategic thinking or creating trust relationships with journalists

Week 3: Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2-3 p.m. EDT

How-to-Pitch Event: Learn how to effectively pitch journalists

Join this live how-to-pitch event featuring a panel of AP journalists as they respond to your written pitches, submitted in advance. The event is for education purposes only, but you’ll have an opportunity to learn directly from AP journalists about what they look for in pitches and how you might improve a pitch to get their attention.
